The Aggie Spring Classic is a
student-run youth outreach event based around livestock production. The
Animal Science Department at UC Davis along with Nutrena Feeds has
established a four-species livestock show as a forum for local youth to
exhibit, learn about animals, and gain new friends. It is open to anyone
between the ages of 8 and 21 and this will be our third year running the
event. Funding for the Aggie Spring Classic is based upon charitable
donations by outside individuals and corporate sponsors.
Individuals who participate in the jackpot do so by paying an entry fee
and show their own animals against others from California and beyond.
Livestock judges place the animals based on muscling, fat, and structure to
evaluate the quality of each animal, much like the process that producers
and meat packers use to evaluate livestock. Along with the entry fee prize
money, we award jackets, equipment, and cash to participants who excel in
the competition.
A common goal links the groups who fund the jackpot. Not only do they
find it as an outlet to advertise their company or products, but more
importantly, they see it as a beneficial activity for today's youth.
Leadership, sportsmanship, communication, and the business side of raising
livestock are all benefits with which our exhibitors leave the fairgrounds,
and we strive to make each year's show better than ever. Our ultimate goal
is to give the next generation of youth an arena in which they can learn
about livestock production and gain a lifelong respect for the industry in
which it is based.
